As if from a fable or folk-tale, up a classic private farm road and into a charming woodland setting surrounded by mountains, this chalet is dream-like in so many ways. The Swiss-style building is 3 floors of living space (plus a loft), with its main entrance on the middle level. It is constructed from 12 inch logs (imported from Canada) that express a sturdy frame with rising peaks echoing an enchanted spirit that will inspire in any season.
Carefully crafted landscaping defines the approach to a bluestone patio. A cathedral-arched heavy wood door opens into a magical entrance hall with inlaid bluestone floor and bluestone wall. From the upper floor’s cathedral-esque open timber structure, light filters down illuminating tastefully designed trim, stained glass and imaginative finishes. On this middle-level is a wood-burning stove with gleaming silver pipes, a full bathroom (with its own compliment of creative touches like cherry trim and floor), a handsome full bedroom, and office (or possible bedroom) with stairs to the lower level.
Dramatic log-lined ceilings and glowing windows are visible as you climb the cherry and bluestone steps to the upper floors. The kitchen, dining area and living room are all open and share access to a brilliant, screened porch overlooking the backyard (with a fire-pit) below (stairs off the exterior deck descend to the yard from this 3rd floor). There is also an additional half bath on this floor, just off the ship-stairs that ascend to a 4th floor loft space kids of any age will adore (90sqft). From the yard, there is access to the lower-level living space (also accessible from the office room).
On this ground floor is an additional bedroom, a tidy family-room/movie theatre, an additional full bathroom, and a utility room/workshop. In fact, much of this lower-level was originally conceived by local architect Lee Friedman to be a safety bunker.
Set in a magical 5 acre parcel along a babbling brook (with a divine swimming hole) and adjacent to over 300 acres of NYC land, this dream-like space may just be the best regenerative space ever constructed.
Close to Catskill Scenic Trail, 15 minutes to Delhi, and 30 to Oneonta.
